============================================================================= WinDVA for DVArchive 3.0 Version 1.0.1 (04/02/04) By j.m. ============================================================================= ___________ Description WinDVA is a Win32-based launcher program for DVArchive 3.0. It offers the following features: * Easy customization of key Java options including memory and JVM launcher * Support for all current DVArchive command line parameters * Ability to hide the DVArchive window on startup, with access via an icon in the system tray * Ability to install DVArchive as a service on Windows NT/2K/XP * Automatic deletion of any obsolete semaphore files before launching DVArchive * Automatic restart of DVArchive if it is terminated while WinDVA is still running * Support for multiple profiles for those running multiple DVArchive servers on a single PC * Gracefully shuts down DVArchive upon Windows shutdown/logoff (only in tray icon or service mode) While WinDVA is free, I do accept donations. If you like WinDVA and want to donate, you can do so in any amount you like via PayPal to jm409@hotmail.com (if you prefer some other method, email me). I greatly appreciate any donations you can make! ____________ Requirements * A PC running Windows 98/NT/2K/XP or the like * DVArchive 3.0 * Java JRE 1.4.1 (or higher) Please read and acknowledge the DISCLAIMER below before installing and using this program. ____________ Installation Extract "WinDVA.exe" to the directory in which you installed DVArchive. PLEASE NOTE: in order for WinDVA to work, the DVArchive JAR file MUST be located in that directory AND MUST NOT have been renamed anything other than "DVArchive.jar" (which is its original filename). _____ Usage Run "WinDVA.exe" instead of "DVArchive.jar" whenever you would like to start DVArchive. The first time you run WinDVA you should be presented with the configuration dialog. Here, you should choose the options you want to use to start DVArchive. You can usually leave all options at their default setting. I will briefly mention some of the more important settings you might want to change: * Maximum memory. You may want to raise this from the default (64m) to 128m or higher, depending on the number of days and channels DVArchive is set to display for your TV listings. * DVArchive configuration file. You can change this to specify the XML file DVArchive will use to store its configuration. While this usually isn't necessary, I STRONGLY RECOMMEND doing so if you intend to install DVArchive as a service. Otherwise, you may get unpredictable results (e.g. DVArchive may use different configuration files depending on how/when the service is started). * Window mode on startup. By default, DVArchive will be hidden on startup, accessible only via the system tray icon. If you would prefer not to have a system tray icon, you can alter that behavior here. PLEASE NOTE: if you choose not to use a tray icon, the only way to get back to the configuration dialog is to run WinDVA with the "configure" action (see "Command Line Options" below). If WinDVA is already running, you will need to shut it down before doing this. * Install/Remove service. This allows you to install WinDVA/DVArchive as a service on Windows NT/2K/XP and variants. You can choose whether to have the service start automatically on system startup. PLEASE NOTE: since WinDVA is only a wrapper of sorts for DVArchive 3.0, there are a couple of issues you might notice. First, WinDVA doesn't stop you from closing DVArchive via its "File | Quit" menu or the Windows "Close" button. However, WinDVA tries to detect when this has happened so that it may automatically restart DVArchive. Second, along similar lines, when running WinDVA with a tray icon, you probably expect the Windows "Minimize" button to send DVArchive to the tray. It obviously doesn't. However, you can accomplish the same thing by either left-clicking the tray icon to toggle the visibility of DVArchive OR by using the options in the popup menu that appears when you right-click the tray icon. ____________________ Command Line Options ACTIONS: WinDVA supports a few command line actions in the format: "WinDVA action" where "action" is ONE of the following valid user actions: "install" - silently install WinDVA as a MANUAL service "remove" - silently remove WinDVA as a service "configure" - configure WinDVA PROFILES: WinDVA also includes support for using multiple profiles via the command line. This is only useful if you need to run more than one instance of DVArchive on a single PC. You can instruct WinDVA to use a profile other than the default by using the following formats: "WinDVA profile" OR "WinDVA action profile" where "action" is ONE of the valid user actions listed above and "profile" is whatever you would like to call the new profile. Profile names must not contain any spaces and must be unique from any other profile names (including the internal default, which is simply "WinDVA"). EXAMPLES: "WinDVA configure" - configure the main WinDVA profile "WinDVA configure DVA2" configure a profile named "DVA2" "WinDVA DVA2" - start WinDVA (and DVArchive) using the "DVA2" profile ______________ Uninstallation Delete "WinDVA.exe" and "WinDVA.ini" from the directory in which you installed DVArchive. _____ Links DVArchive http://www.dvarchive.org Java http://www.java.com ReplayTV FAQ http://www.replayfaqs.com __________ DISCLAIMER THE SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED "AS IS", WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE AND NONINFRINGEMENT.
